from lawmakers (grant) deputy attorney general rod rosenstein...on the job just a few weeks...made the decision...saying "special counsel is nevessary in order for the american people to have full confidence in the outcome of the investigation... regarding what role the russians have have played in the 20-16 presidential election. robert mueller now takes over that probe... rosenstein says mueller will have the resources he needs and is "authorized to prosecute federal crimes arising from the investigation of these matters," the appointment comes amid criticism aimed at the white house since the firing of former f-b-i director james comey. mueller led the f-b-i from 2001 to 2013. he was confirmed unanimously...he enjoys support and admiration from lawmakers on both sides of the isle. he's widely considered to be a non- partisan...straight shooter...who will work dillegently to get to the

was too late. he passed away on tuesday. (pam)dbxthis afternoon, kron 4's charles clifford spoke with his family, who say they are devastated. by all accounts, 6-year-old jayden brizuela was a wonderful little boy. his aunt, monica aguilar, says he was an only child and the light of his mother's life.sot but last month, jayden fell ill and his mom took him to the doctor.sot over the next few weeks jayden was in and out of multiple hospitals, urgent cares and doctor's offices. he would get worse then get better and then worse again. last friday jayden loudly complained of a severe headache and his mother took him to an emergency room. a check of his spinal fluid revealed jayden had bacterial meningitis, a very serious infection that kills about 500 people nationwide every year. standup

permission, doctors tested to see if jayden could breathe on his own. he could not, and that's when the young boy died. we reached out to valley medical center for comment, but citing federal patient privacy rules they declined to elaborate they did say that county health officials were informed of the meningitis. jayden's illness appears to be an isolated case.>jayden's devastated family is now left with more questions than answers. they don't know how he contracted the meningitis and they're frustrated that it took so long to get a correct diagnosis. while they are happy with the care jayden eventually received at valley medical center, they are troubled that so many doctors and nurses couldn't find the problem sooner.sot

(pam) a man suspected in more than two dozen arson fires in the east bay.. is now identified by police... (pam) and investigators are worried, he may be responsible for dozens of other fires.(steve) kron-4's alecia reid joins us live from concord with what investigators are revealing tonight about how they tracked him down.. the suspect was driving his car when he was arrested.and it was that same toyota rav-four that helped investigators track him down. sot - we are very relieved to have the suspect in custody. james bishop iii is being charged with at least two dozen counts of arson. that includes vehicles and buildings with people inside. sot - the fires as they occurred adjacent to structures inhabited by sleeping occupants is of grave concern to everyone in public

safety.starting in april, there was a huge uptick in vehicle fires in contra costa county. and after careful investigation, authorities noticed a similarity between all of them....sot - an accelerant was used to set the outside of the vehicles on fire.they also realized those types of vehicle fires extended to the beginning of the year.sot - right now we're investigating fires in 2017 but part of the investigation is outside of that time frame. nearby surveillance cameras at a number of the locations... captured images of bishop's toyota rav -4... which investigators say tied bishop to the fires.the vehicles were torched all over contra costa county.including lafayette (jp), brentwood(hm), walnut creek(hm), and pleasant hill(ha).sot - as these incidents occurred we became very concerned and accelerated our coordinationstanduparson investigators are looking into an additional 30 fires that may be for bishop's current charges . his arraignment is set for tomorrow.reporting live from concord.

(steve) in the north bay - disbelief and shock after the discovery of two people found dead inside their home. authorities say they were called to this large house off a small narrow road near the atherton exit in novato early this morning. deputies say the two people- an older couple- were found inside shot. throughout the day - detectives searched the house as they investigated the double shooting to try and figure out exactly what happened. neighbors say the couple was quiet, but friendly. they had lived in the home for at least 40 years. (steve) it was de ja vu today at the d-m-v offices... computers crashed... and long lines formed with people waiting to get help.(pam) today's statewide outage.. only lasted a few hours... shorter than the one last october.. nonetheless .. it was just as irritating for d-m-v customers. kron 4's justine waldman is live in our newsroom with what happened ... and what this means for the d-m-v tomorrow. afternoon, the systems went back up... but it left a backlog of people waiting for help. and questions as to why.. it seems .. this keeps happening. a long line outside and inside people trying to tolerate the time spent waiting.pretty typical for the san francisco dmv officethough wednesday, frustration also filtered insot they really need to create a better system than the one they have this is really ridiculousaround noon, statewide computers at offices went black.because of connectivity issues, according to the dmv.this impacted driver license and vehicle registration transactions. and left lots of people unable to get what they needed accomplished.sot i can't say on tv what i am feeling right now..this has happened before.. last october, an outage hit every single d-m-v branch in the state some were closed for days!the problem was blamed on a hardware failure in sacramento. sot there is nothing you can do but waitseveral hours later, the systems was back up and started running again.the dmv doesn't know what caused the latest outage the

julia orr speaks for "jameson animal rescue ranch" in the napa valley -- or "jarr." a non-profit organization deeply concerned by this case. julia orr/jarr- "we definitely have a concern that there's a serial animal killer out here." the initial reward offered in this case was two thousand dollars... then, it went up to four and a half thousand dollars... now, it's up to ten thousand dollars... and, julia says it's possible even that amount can increase.carine peters/discovered dogs- "someone knows something, someone saw something -- um, it's time to get some answers." carine peters is the one who first called animal services back in february about as many as a dozen dismembered dogs left on the side of the road. she still walks past the site on a weekly basis.carine peters/discovered dogs- "some people have sent me pictures to look and see if i can identify and possibly, um, put their mind at ease that their dog was or was not in this particular find." county"... have teamed to offer the 10-thousand dollar reward. call any of those groups with information that could eventually help solve this case.julia orr/jarr- "we felt this case was so important and so egregious, that we had to do something." carine peters/discovered dogs- "those dogs will be engrained in my mind -- probably, until the day i die." the solano county sheriff's office manages animal services in vallejo... and, a sheriff's spokesperson says this case is still open. in vallejo, philippe djegal, kron four news. (pam) emotional testimony and a possible snag for the prosecution .... as the penalty phase of the sierra lamar murder trial.. continues in san jose.(steve) now new information has surfaced during the trial today... and it could have reperussions... the defense is now suggesting there could be evidence of what is termed as 'lingering doubt' about defendant antolin garcia torres's guilt. the defense informed the court of detective herman leon... detective leon oversaw much of the sierra lamar investigation, and last week a judge found that leon gave a false testimony in another case...

(steve) if the information about the false testimony is not permitted in the penalty phase, legal experts say it could be part of an appeal. meantime, the prosecution will call more wtinesses tomorrow, including sierra's mother and father. (pam) bart is taking action to make sure riders do not get stuck in the dark during a power outage. bart installed new batteries to power the backup emergency lights .. this, after a p-g-and e outage plunged riders in the dark at the montgomery bart station last month. then, days later, emergency lights failed at bart's richmond station. bart says, an investigation revealed 14-

shock after learning a man who taught children at their local library... was also a registered sex offender.... and a murder suspect.(steve) ohio police say the man confessed to killing a 13 year old girl... after her body was found last week investigators say john bove was a friend to the 13 year old's family. and that he admitted to shooting and killing the teen. now it's been revealed just weeks before his arrest...he was teaching classes to children and adults a library. that library says they had no idea about his past because they never ran a background check. a policy they say they are now reconsidering. (pam) twenty- one members of a brutal gang in los angeles ... have been arrested following a 3 -year fbi investigation. during a pre-dawn sweep today, agents and officers served warrants at more than 3 - dozen locations ... looking for members of the notorious m-s-13. among those

arrested... the former head of the gang, who faces a number of federal charges. three gang members are charged with murder. los angeles is the u-s base for m-s-13, which has tens of thousands of members worldwide. authorities count the gang among the largest criminal organizations in the u.s. (pam) the bee industry is buzzing .... over the arrest of a man accused of stealing thousands of beehives from california almond orchards.. the hives started vanishing overnight in several california counties.... a problem that began three years ago.. then police got a tip last month and discovered nearly one million dollars worth of stolen beehives on a lot ... outside fresno. they arrested a 51-year-old sacramento area man. the suspect is accused of lying to farmers - and renting out hives which were 'not' his own. bees are big business in california - with many
